The Bunaken National Marine Park was formally established in 1991 and is among the first of Indonesia's growing system of marine parks. The park covers a total surface area of 89,065 hectares, 97% of which is overlain by sparkling clear, warm tropical water. The remaining 3% of the park is terrestrial, including the five islands of Bunaken, Manado Tua, Mantehage, Nain and Siladen. Although each of these islands has a special character, it is the aquatic ecosystem that attracts most naturalists.

The waters of Bunaken National Marine Park are extremely deep (1566 m in Manado Bay), clear (up to 35-40 m visibility), refreshing in temperature (27-29 C) and harbor some of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world. Pick any of group of interest - corals, fish, echinoderms or sponges - and the number of families, genera or species is bound to be astonishingly high. For example, 7 of the 8 species of giant clams that occur in the world, occur in Bunaken. The park has around 70 genera of corals; compare this to a mere 10 in Hawaii. Although the exact number of fish species is unknown, it may be slightly higher than in the Philippines, where 2,500 species, or nearly 70% of all fish species known to the Indo-western Pacific, are found.
Oceanic currents may explain, in part, why Bunaken National Marine Park is such a treasure trove of biodiversity. Northeasternly currents generally sweep through the park but abundant counter currents and gyros related to lunar cycles are believed to be a trap for free swimming larvae. This is particularly true on the south side of the crescent-shaped Bunaken Island, lying in the heart of the park. A snorkler or diver in the vicinity of Lekuan or Fukui may spot over 33 species of butterfly fish and numerous types of groupers, damsels, wrasses and gobies. The gobies, smallish fish with bulging eyes and modified fins that allow them to attach to hard surfaces, are the most diverse but least known group of fish in the park.

When it comes to fine dining, however, visitors to the Japanese capital don't necessarily have to stretch to Michelin-starred prices to enjoy a gastronomic experience.

Conveyor belt sushi might have been invented in Osaka, but it's hard to beat the freshness and diversity on offer in Tokyo, thanks largely to what passes through the world-famous Tsukiji Fish Market. Raw fish aficionados swear by the fare available at the sushi shacks surrounding it, but if you want to avoid the sunrise trek there, and the inevitable wait for a seat, a refined alternative is Central Mikuni's at Tokyo Station.

Owned by the popular local chef, Kiyomi Mikuni, this trendy basement eatery resembles an early-20th-century diner with a lively open kitchen in the centre. Although you can tuck yourself away in a booth, the best fun is sitting around the conveyor belt. It transports plates which are colour coded according to the price, and choices range from traditionally prepared sashimi, to contemporary creations such as spicy Mexican rolls.

The idea of a tofu extravaganza may not appeal to everyone, but a visit to the famed Tokyo Shiba Toufuya-Ukai should be on every gastronome's list. Located next to the historic Shiba Park, only minutes from Roppongi, this elegant establishment is undeniably one of those “only in Japan” experiences. Boasting traditional zashiki-style rooms with exquisite tatami floors, tofu is the primary fare here and it's served in every conceivable form. It's also home grown, made daily using special beans grown in Hokkaido in Japan's more remote north.

Also unique to Tokyo is chanko nabe. It's best known as the food that gives the giant athletes of sumo wrestling their bulk, and one of the most famous restaurants in which to try is Chanko Dining Waka. It's located in Shinjuku, and owned by the retired sumo Grand Champion, Wakanohana.

Chanko nabe isn't a style of cooking as such but a style of eating, and a much-loved production encapsulating Japanese cuisine perfectly. It starts with the ceremony of a nabe pot of delicious broth being brought to the table, heated on a portable burner, then filled with meat or seafood and vegetables which are cooked at various stages.

While Tokyo may have been crowned the world's gastronomic capital, the contributions of proud neighbouring cities, Osaka and Kyoto, have now also been recognised. In October last year, Michelin launched another new 2010 guide featuring 203 establishments from both cities, confirming them as hot new destinations for gourmet travellers.

Osaka may be modern, commercial, and architecturally bland as Japanese cities go, but as any local will tell you, it's always been the ultimate “gastronomes" haven. So strong is the Osakan passion for food, that the Japanese have bestowed a special term upon the city called “kuidaore”, which roughly means “to ruin oneself by extravagance in food”.

From unusual local delicacies sold on street stalls, to five-star restaurants where you can blow a week's wages, there's food at every turn. Just a few of the city's unique dishes include balls of fried dough stuffed with octopus called takoyaki, a special grilled squid called ikayaki, and Osaka udon - soft, thick and simply delicious white noodles served in a broth.

One of the essential Osakan dining experiences, however, is okonomiyaki - a kind of Japanese pancake or pizza - and for a gourmet experience, locals and visitors alike are often found at the five-level Okonomiyaki Restaurant Chibo. Located near the Namba subway station, this hearty meal features whipped eggs cooked on a hot plate and stuffed with pork, pasta, cheese and seafood. The chefs cook it to order, then bring it to your table on a hot griddle so you can graze.

For a more substantial dining experience, however, you can venture to Hanagatami at the elegant Ritz-Carlton Osaka. Boasting a lavish Japanese inspired decor, this restaurant specialises in traditional kaiseki cuisine, which is a fancy term for a gut-busting multi-course meal consisting of sushi, sashimi, tofu, soup, fish, vegetables, a hot pot and desert.

Kyoto may only be 43 kilometres from Osaka, but as Japanese cities go it couldn't be more different. It's the cultural heart of Japan, an elegant, conservative city dotted with temples, Shinto shrines and an authentic geisha zone, all of which lure more than 40 million visitors a year.

When it comes to cuisine, Kyoto is famous for many alluring foods including tofu. This is largely due to an abundance of underground springs producing pure, soft water - an important element in making tofu - as well as the local production of some of Japan's best quality soybeans. However Kyoto is also famous for traditional Japanese guest houses called ryokans, and some of these have now been recognised in the new Michelin guide as essential places to eat.

One definitely worth splashing out on for an overnight stay and a gourmet dinner is Nishiyama, a beautiful ryokan close to City Hall in the heart of Kyoto. Ryokans also tend to specialise in kaiseki cuisine, and this one is no exception. It offers guests expansive multi-course menus which change with the seasons, but if you prefer to be less adventurous, you can also opt for the year-round shabu shabu, a delicious hot pot consisting of simmered vegetables, tofu and meat in a soup.

For gastronomes, however, a visit to Kyoto should also include time for dinner at Kanga-an - one of the city's best kept secrets. Although reservations need to be made several days in advance, this alluring exotic temple restaurant is worth the effort. Widely regarded as one of Kyoto's top restaurants, it's located north of the Imperial Palace and serves an ancient vegetarian style of cuisine called fucha ryori.

Following in true Japanese form it's another multi-course indulgence, but in this eatery food isn't the only appeal. Tucked away in a genteel residential area, Kanga-an is traditional, opulent, and bathed in lantern light and serene tranquility, so much so that you could be forgiven for believing that you are being fed a banquet in the Emperor's holiday home.

From sushi to noodles, and okonomiyaki to kaiseki cuisine, the experience of Japanese cuisine is a gastronome's delight, as well as a feast for all the senses. For visitors to this enigmatic country, however, there will be challenges, largely choosing what, and where, to indulge their taste buds.

We were halfway to Coconut Moon, a beach bar owned by Kiyomasa Higa, Japan's godfather of rock, when the taxi radio crackled into action. Coconut Moon was shut, having conceded defeat to Typhoon Lupit. The locals had been praying for rain and they'd got it. Lupit, the first typhoon of the year, arrived in Okinawa about two hours after we did. But while typhoons have scant regard for tourists, our driver had it sussed.

"You want awamori [a rice-based spirit]? Dancing?"

After three days of lashing rain and cancelled flights and ferries our bedraggled crowd was up for anything. And that's how we ended up in Nakayuki (Little Break), an inconspicuous bar in the village of Onna, taking turns on a traditional three-stringed guitar, eating dragon fruit, necking guava juice laced with awamori and "pushing the happiness" until 3am. Sharing the love with locals has never been so much fun.

Welcome to Japan's sub-tropical alter ego. An island archipelago flung 1,000km across the Pacific, Okinawa is Japan, but not as we know it. Even the Japanese regard Okinawa as exotically foreign, and until its annexation to mainland Japan as Okinawa Prefecture in 1879, it was exactly that.

The Ryukyu Kingdom was for centuries a self-governing tributary state to China, before being invaded by the mainland Satsuma clan at the start of the 17th century. The capital Naha, midway down the island chain on the main island, is closer to the tip of the Philippines than it is to Tokyo and on a clear day, from the southernmost island, Yonaguni, it's possible to see Taiwan, 111km away. If you're looking for quintessential Japan you won't find it here, but Okinawa's bizarre mish-mash of influences makes an interesting ride.

Among its biggest draws are the people. A happy, welcoming if endearingly bonkers lot, the dark-skinned Okinawans are an origin-defying blend of South Pacific-meets-North Asia, with a dash of the Inuit for good measure.

The rare fusion of influences also permeates music, culture and dialect. Traditional music in Okinawa has overtones of gamelan from Indonesia. Its stir-fries are comfortingly familiar. Chinese "lucky" cats litter the streets, and Japan's clean architectural lines are hijacked by curlicued eves that infiltrate the roofs of temples, castles and traditional houses.

Where mainland Japan is conservative, Okinawa is carefree and progressive. Tokyo's "salaryman" suits are replaced by kariyushi wear (the local version of the Hawaiian shirt).

Investigators discovered a 70-percent increase in these people's chances of developing type II diabetes, when compared with individuals who never smoked a single cigarette in their lives. One of the main reasons for this correlation, the team explained, was the fact that most people who stopped smoking tended to gain a lot of weight and to become obese. This condition is known to be one of the main promoters of both types of diabetes and also of diseases pertaining to the heart and the circulatory system in general.

The team was also quick to point out that die-hard smokers should not use the new study as an excuse to keep smoking. It again underlined the negative health effects of cigarettes, including cancer, lung diseases, strokes and so on. “The message is: Don't even start to smoke. If you smoke, give it up. That's the right thing to do. But people have to also watch their weight,” Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine expert Hsin-Chieh Yeh, the leader of the new investigation, explains.

The research takes into account the medical history of more than 11,000 people, who did not have diabetes between 1987 and 1989. For more than 17 years, the research team regularly collected data on these people, including pieces of information such as the diabetes status, glucose levels, weight, and others. The team notes that the risk of developing type II diabetes is the highest in the first three years, then exhibits a small drop after six years, until it falls back within limits ten years after that person quit smoking. Details of the investigation appear in the latest issue of the respected journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

1. Titik rawan. 5. Mulai dari anda sendiri. Sebagai langkah untuk mencegah timbulnya karat, sudah seharusnya pemilik mobil menggunakan produk anti karat. Memancing di sungai/muara
Yang perlu disiapkan adalah peralatan memancing yang disebutkan di atas dengan memperhatikan faktor umpan dan setting alat pancing. Umpan yang digunakan di lokasi ini umumnya adalah cacing dan udang, sedangkan untuk setting alat pancing adalah memasang mata kail. Jumlah mata kail dalam setiap tongkat pancing minimal 2 mata kail, dengan posisi timah dibawah. Jarak mata kail dengan timah kira-kira 10 cm samapai 15 cm

Memancing di Empang atau Tambak
Peralatan mancing sama seperti di atas dan umpannya tergantung jenis ikan yang akan dipancing. Untuk ikan emas biasanya menggunakan umpan racikan yang dibuat sendiri dan bahan-bahannya juga mudah didapat. Bahannya menggunakan tepung pellet yang berbentuk butiran, daging ikan dan lain-lain. Jika tidak ingin terlalu repot umpan seperti ini bisa diperoleh di toko ikan atau toko pancing. Khusus untuk ikan mujair dan sejenisnya, umpan yang digunakan adalah cacing atau lumut hijau.

Untuk setting alat pancing di lokasi ini, mata kail yang digunakan bisa berjumlah 2 atau lebih dengan posisi pelampung berada diatas mata kail. Ketingian batas pelampung dan timah disesuaikan dengan kedalaman air. Untuk kedalaman 1,5 meter, jarak antara pelampung dan timah juga 1,5 meter, dan pelampung dibatasi pakai stopper.

Setelah aku baca dari websitenya, ternyata event A Mild Live Wanted ini bukan hanya mengakomodir band atau musisi yang sudah jadi, tetapi lebih jauh dari itu, event ini bertujuan untuk mencari talenta dan potensi yang belum terasah, mengelolanya, membawa dan memperkenalkan dan menghadirkan ke kancah musik di Indonesia untuk kemudian menjadikan band baru yang bermutu.
Sebuah event yang sangat meriah, meriah dibanyak sisi, dari sisi edukasi untuk band band baru yang berpotensi maupun dari sisi penikmat musik seantero di Indonesia. Sebuah event yang sulit untuk dilewatkan oleh pemusik di seluruh pelosok Indonesia, karena event ini tidak hanya diselengarakan di kota kota besar di jawa, A Mild Live Wanted 2009 ini juga menjangkau kota kota kecil di di pelosok Indonesia.

Event seperti A Mild Live Wanted 2009 ini layak dijadikan sebuah barometer permusikan di Indonesia, sampai dimana musik Indonesia berkembang. Hal ini bisa dibuktikan dengan banyaknya yang mendaftarkan diri dengan mengirimkan CD demo ke panitia. dan juga antusiasme dari penggila musik, hal ini ditunjukkan dengan tidak pernah sepinya sebuah event A Mild Live dimanapun diadakan. Meskipun banyak perusahaan rokok lainnya yang meniru event semacam ini, tetapi event A Mild Live mempunyai cirri khas sendiri yang tidak bisa ditiru oleh event event lainnya, bahkan sebelum ditiru, A Mild Live sudah memiliki format baru, sehingga event event serupa hanya follower dari A Mild Live. Live footy comes to the iPhone

Aussie Rules Live and Footy 2009 are two AFL iPhone apps looking to kick goals this season.

Each sells for $3.99 on the iTunes store and each shows you live scores from around the grounds plus the latest AFL news. At first glance little separates them, so I decided to put them to the test during the first game of the season between Richmond and Carlton.

The most obvious difference between the two apps is that Aussie Rules Live lets you nominate your favourite team. Now when you launch the app you see the My Team tab by default - with links to your team's news, players, results, line up, injuries and suspensions. Clicking on the Live Games tab gives your a list of current games (not every game in the round) and their start times but it doesn't show the score (a major frustration). Clicking on the game gives you a live score, which take about 10 seconds to update, as well as a quarter by quarter breakdown. Scrolling down this page reveals a list of all the game's goal kickers and a graph to show the margin during the games. There's no simple way to see all the games scheduled for a round - you need to go to the More tab, select the fixture and then choose the round.

Meanwhile Footy 2009 launches straight into its Live Scores app, so you can immediately see the scores around the grounds along with details of the last scoring shot (player and time). Scores take almost a minute to update. Clicking on a game only reveals the main goal kickers for each team. Footy 2009 also features a Matches tab which shows all the matches for the round (although strangely not the ground they're played at). This tab also lists the final score for each game.

One of Footy 2009's strengths is that clicking on a game in the Matches tab shows you each team's recent form and the history between the two clubs - which is handy if you're working on your footy tips. You can also see the ladder and how it changed after the last round. Unfortunately you can't see the fixture, a major disappointment. The iTunes description says "See who your team is playing in the coming rounds" but I've scoured the app and I can't find this feature.

One of Aussie Rules Live's strengths is that you can see the results from previous rounds, either by team or by round. You can also see the fixture by team or by round. According to the iTunes page, head-to-head historical results are coming soon. Aussie Rules Live's biggest weakness is the inability to see all the live scores on the one screen, or even get a quick list of who is playing this weekend. It really needs the Results tab to list every game of the current round by default, with live scores or results next to matches. The iTunes description also says it features "live text commentary for all games", but I couldn't see this during the Richmond v Carlton game.

There's no clear cut winner here, both are impressive apps with lots of polish yet both seem incomplete. Aussie Rules Live seems aimed at the die-hard fan who wants to quickly access information about their team, whereas Footy 2009 seems aimed more at the general fan who wants a snapshot of what's happening around the grounds.

If I was really into footy tipping or fantasy football I'd probably opt for Footy 2009 so I can keep an eye on every game. If I just cared about my club I'd be frustrated by Footy 2009's lack of a fixture and I'd probably opt for Aussie Rules Live and then fire up Safari to get live scores from somewhere like thescore.com.au, m.foxsports.com.au or t.sportsflash.com.au/wap2/. If I was a footy tragic, I'd probably just hand over eight bucks for both and enjoy the best of both worlds.

10 common car-buying mistakes

Buying a new car can be exciting. But it's also a complex process through which you can end up overpaying by hundreds or thousands of dollars or with a vehicle that you won't be happy with down the road. Below are 10 mistakes that car buyers often make that can quickly turn that initial excitement into buyer remorse--and how to avoid them.

You can find more in-depth information and advice on each of the following subjects in Consumer Reports' new 384-page Smart Buyer's Guide to Buying or Leasing a Car, available in bookstores. It provides a five-step plan that guides you through every aspect of the car-buying experience, showing you how to simplify the process, find key information, and take control of the negotiations at the dealership.

1. Falling in love with a model.
When spending tens of thousands of dollars on a car, emotion shouldn't rule the day. Becoming infatuated with a single model can blind you to alternative vehicles that may be better for your needs or make you skimp on thoroughly researching a vehicle's ratings, reviews, reliability, or safety and pricing information. A wide-eyed approach can also leave you more susceptible to a salesperson's tactics to get you to pay more than you should. To determine which vehicle is best for you, you should set emotion aside and focus on doing your homework, comparing different models, and assessing your real wants and needs. There will be plenty of time for emotion after you've bought the vehicle.

2. Skipping the test drive.
The test drive is one of the most important parts of the car-buying process. A lot of vehicles look good on paper--especially in glossy brochure photos--but the test drive is your best chance to see how a vehicle measures up to expectations and how well it "fits" you and your family. You don't want any surprises after you've bought it. That's why it's surprising that many people give vehicles only a token test or, worse, none at all. That is a mistake and a sure recipe for buyer remorse. It's critical that you take ample time--at least 30 minutes--to conduct a complete test drive and perform a thorough walk-around of any vehicle you're considering.

3. Negotiating down from the sticker price.
Don't use the sticker price as your gauge when negotiating a deal. A salesperson may offer you a deal that's, say, $500 below the sticker price, and many consumers will conclude, often mistakenly, that they're getting a good deal. Unless the vehicle is in big demand and short supply, you can often get an even lower price by negotiating up from what the dealer paid for the vehicle. When you know the dealer's true cost, you'll know how much profit margin it has to work with and can determine a reasonable target price with which to begin your negotiations. You can calculate the dealer's cost by subtracting any behind-the-scenes sales incentives, such as dealer rebates and holdbacks, from the dealer invoice price. 4. Focusing only on the monthly payment when negotiating.
Salespeople like to focus on a monthly-payment figure while negotiating a deal. Indeed, "How much were you thinking of paying each month?" might be one of the first questions to greet you when you meet a salesperson. Don't take the bait. It's the first step down a slippery slope of being manipulated with numbers and overpaying for your vehicle. Using the monthly payment as the focus, the salesperson can lump the new-vehicle price, trade-in value, and financing or leasing terms together, giving him or her too much latitude to give you a "good price" in one area while making up for it in another. Instead, insist on negotiating one thing at a time. Settle on the vehicle's price first, then discuss a trade-in, financing, or leasing separately, as necessary. A leasing tip: Don't bring up your desire to lease until after you've agreed on the vehicle's price.

5. Buying the "deal" instead of the vehicle.
Automakers have been offering a variety of attractive sales incentives in recent years, from 0% financing and hefty cash rebates to employee-discount pricing programs. These can save you money, but it's important to remember that any deal is only as good as the car that's attached to it. Just because you can get a good discount doesn't mean you should buy the vehicle. After all, you'll be living with the vehicle for years, so make sure it's the right one for you. Thoroughly research any model you're considering and check our Ratings and reviews of competitive models (see our New-vehicle Ratings comparison, available to subscribers). You may find you can get a much better vehicle for not much more money. Also check the reliability of the model (see our Reliability Ratings, available to subscribers). Despite an attractive discount, a vehicle with subpar reliability--and the possibility of hefty depreciation--might not be much of a bargain in the long run. A related tip: Don't let a special incentive keep you from negotiating. Rebates and special financing are subsidized by the automaker, not the dealership. You should still negotiate the vehicle's price as if there were no incentive. There's no reason you shouldn't get the best price and the incentive, too.

6. Waiting until you're in the dealership to think about financing.
You might be a whiz at negotiating a good deal, but if you don't choose your financing just as carefully, you could lose everything you saved on the vehicle's purchase price, and more. A car shopper who hasn't researched financing terms is especially vulnerable to being manipulated by the dealership. Not only do you only have the dealership's terms from which to choose, which are often higher than elsewhere, but dealers also often mark up the interest rate of a loan over what you actually qualify for--a tactic called "interest-rate bumping." It can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars more over the term of the loan. That's why it's critical to comparison shop for financing terms at different financial institutions and get prequalified for an auto loan before you go to the dealership to buy the vehicle. Check interest rates at banks, credit unions, or online financial sites to see which offers you the best rate. If the dealer can offer you terms that are better than what you got elsewhere, you can always choose that deal instead.

7. Underestimating the value of modern safety features.
Today's vehicles offer an array of advanced safety features. But many buyers don't know which are most important or what to look for when comparing vehicles. Antilock brake systems (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and head-protecting side air bags, for instance, are effective and well worth the money. Studies have shown that ESC can significantly reduce accidents and fatalities. The feature is especially important for SUVs, because it can help prevent rollovers. Side-crash tests show that head-protecting side air bags are critical in preventing fatalities in side impacts. Unfortunately, you can't always depend on a dealership's salespeople to give you accurate information or reliable guidance about these features. That's why you should thoroughly research the benefit of all available safety features and look for vehicles that have the ones that will best protect you and your family.

8. Buying unnecessary extras.
Dealerships often try to sell you extras that boost their profit margin but are a waste of you money. They can include rustproofing, fabric protection, paint protectant, or VIN etching, in which the vehicle identification number is etched onto the windows to deter thieves. Don't accept those unnecessary services and fees. If you see those items on the bill of sale and you haven't agreed to them, simply cross them out and refuse to pay for them. Vehicle bodies are already coated to protect against rust. And recent CR reliability surveys show that rust is not a major problem with modern cars. You can treat upholstery and apply paint protectant yourself with good off-the-shelf products that cost only a few dollars. If you decide you want VIN etching, you can buy a kit to do it yourself for less than $25, instead of the $200 that some dealerships charge. Also think twice about an extended warranty. It can cost hundreds of dollars. But if you buy a model with good reliability or if you expect to have the vehicle only for five years or less, it often isn't worth the cost.

9. Not researching the value of your current car.
You could get a great deal on your new car but lose all of the savings--and more--on your trade-in. That's why it's critical that you research the value of your current car before buying your new one. Find out what both the used-car retail and wholesale prices are, so that you'll know what you should be able to get if you trade it in or if you sell it yourself. Typically, you'll get more money by selling it, as long as you're willing to put in the additional effort. By knowing your vehicle's true value and by sticking to your price during the negotiations, you can get your car's full value, whether you trade it in or sell it yourself.

10. Not having a used car checked by an independent mechanic.
When buying a used car, condition is everything. Even the most reliable vehicle can turn into a lemon if it's poorly maintained. Before you buy a used vehicle, have it scrutinized by a repair shop that routinely does diagnostic work. A thorough diagnosis should cost around $100, but confirm the price in advance. A good mechanic should be able to tell if the car has been in a major accident or has a hidden but costly problem. Ask for a written report detailing the car's condition, noting any problems found and what it would cost to repair them. You can then use the report in your negotiations with the seller to adjust the price accordingly.

Ask the right questions

When you've located one or more vehicles you're interested in--whether being sold by a dealership or private party--you can begin sizing up their condition and history over the phone. Ask some basic questions about the vehicles. The answers you get can help you determine whether it's worth a trip to take a closer look. That's especially true when you're buying from a private party. Break the ice with soft questions such as the car's color, but then get specific about its condition, features, and history. Any strange or far-fetched answers should put you on guard.

"How many miles has it been driven?" If the mileage is higher than, say, 20,000 per year or lower than 5,000, ask why. If a car has high mileage because the owner had a long highway commute, that's better than if the car was used for a lot of short trips, stop-and-go driving, or a delivery route. Low mileage is preferable, but a low odometer reading is no guarantee of gentle care.

"How is it equipped?" Whether they're listed in the ad or not, ask about key features: number of doors; transmission type; air conditioning; antilock brakes; air bags; sound system; power windows, locks, seats, or mirrors; cruise control; sunroof; upholstery material; and so forth. Double-checking on these could produce some telling comments.

"What is the car's condition?" Start with this broad question and see where the seller takes it. He or she could bring up something you wouldn't have thought to ask about.

"How about the body and upholstery?" If these areas weren't covered in the discussion above, ask about them specifically.

"Has it been in an accident?" Ask about the extent of damage, cost of repairs, and the shop that did the work. Don't worry too much about minor scrapes, but think twice about a car that has been in a serious accident.

"Do you have service records?" You want a car that has been well cared for. That means that it should have had recommended maintenance performed at the manufacturer's specified service intervals. If the owner says he did the maintenance himself but can't produce any receipts for parts, be skeptical. Ask for receipts for any new muffler, brakes, tires, or other "wear" parts that have been replaced. Repair-shop receipts normally note the car's odometer reading, helping you verify the car's history.

"Has the car been recalled?"
"Has the problem been corrected?"
Ask if any safety-recall work was performed or, more important, needs to be done. Dealerships keep records of that. Note the mileage when work was performed.

QUESTIONS FOR PRIVATE SELLERS:

"Have you owned it since it was new?" You want to be able to piece together as much of the car's service history as you can. Be wary about a car that has changed hands several times in a few years.

"Are you the person who drove it the most?" Ideally, you want to meet the car's principal driver or drivers to see if they strike you as responsible people.

"Why are you selling the car?" Look for a plausible explanation rather than an interesting story. If the answer sounds evasive, be wary. Ask to see service records and other evidence that the car was maintained properly.

Analysis: Apple's iPhone Shows How Upgrades Should Be Done

Never mind the cut and paste. Never mind the picture messaging, or all the other stuff that should have been in iPhone 1.0. Never mind the new payment methods that will shake up the mobile shopping marketplace. The most radical thing Apple said at the iPhone 3.0 software release was:

"The upgrade will be available for free, this summer, to all iPhone owners."

Why can't any other smart phone vendors do this? Apple's upgrade strategy helps their users and the company in a bunch of different ways. It lets users buy iPhones with some confidence, knowing that they're not going to get left behind next year. It lets developers aim at the latest platform, without having to worry about supporting the older versions of the iPhone OS. And it keeps users with Apple because they don't enter a new buying cycle, thinking of new choices and potentially churning off to the latest new thing.

Of course, Apple can do this in part because they don't make all their money off phones. Smartphone makers who don't have app stores need to keep selling new phones to generate new license fees. Apple, on the other hand, makes money off apps and off of keeping people in their ecosystem – iPhone owners are more likely to buy Macs and sign up for MobileMe, for instance. So there isn't as much pressure on Apple to sell new hardware every year as there is to keep their installed base large and buying new software.

Just saying "Apple's really a software company" sells them short in this case. Because it looks like other smart phone OS companies want to issue updates – they just can't, for some reason.

Take RIM. Like Apple, RIM controls both their hardware and their operating system. So you'd think that pushing out juicy new updates to keep BlackBerrys fresh would be relatively easy. But no; BlackBerry updates typically fall into a black hole of "carrier approval processes" for months at a time, trickling out carrier by carrier and model by model, unheralded and poorly understood.

RIM claims that these delays are inevitable when you work with carriers, but Apple works with carriers. Apple works with more than 100 carriers. They don't have this problem.

Microsoft is in an even worse state. Not only do they also say they're held up by carriers, they can't seem to hit their own development milestones, and they have trouble telling a clear story about when new versions of their software will be available.

I'm a little more forgiving of Microsoft than of RIM on this, because Microsoft has to deal with multiple versions of their OS and multiple hardware manufacturers. But you can't ignore the fact that one reason Windows Mobile has been losing steam is Microsoft's inability to update it quickly, cleanly and frequently.

Almost nobody in the U.S. owns a Nokia Symbian phone, but I've used them. The problem with upgrading Symbian devices is that they require reading tech news blogs (because Nokia doesn't tell your phone when upgrades are available), running a specialized application and plugging your phone into a PC to load the new software. It's no wonder most people don't bother.

As for Google Android, who knows? They've pushed out a couple of bug fixes which speak well of their ability to get new software to the masses. But Google hasn't been tested by a true Android 2.0 rollout yet.

MMS, turn-by-turn directions and cut and paste are all great. Other phones have had them for a while. But Apple's smooth, clean, clear upgrade process shows why the iPhone is so popular, and why it has so much momentum. It's not about the features; Apple has once again shown that they're a step ahead in terms of making software more usable.

Pengerusakan hutan menyumbang 20% dari emisi GRK setiap tahun. Dan lebih banyak lagi emisi yang dihasilkan dari seluruh dunia seperti dari mobil, truk, kereta, kapal dan pesawat di 2004.

Di Indonesia, hutan rawa gambut lenyap akibat pembalakan, pengeringan dan di bakar untuk perluasan kelapa sawit. Lahan gambu ini (kadang-kadang hinggakedalaman 12 meter) menyimpan karbon yang sangat besar. Ketika mereka di keringakn dan di bakar akan menjadi sebuah bom karbon, melepaskan hampir dua milliyar ton karbondioksida berbahaya setiap tahun.

Jangan Pilih Politisi Penjahat Lingkungan Pada Pemilu 2009

Beberapa bulan menjelang Pemilu Legislatif 2009 pada bulan April nanti sebanyak 11.301 calon anggota DPR RI dari 38 partai politik, 1.116 calon anggota Dewan Perwakilan Daerah (DPD), serta ratusan ribu calon anggota DPRD I dan DPRD II bersaing memperebutkan kursi anggota legislatif di masing-masing tingkatan posisi. Belum lagi Pemilihan Presiden yang akan dilaksanakan sekitar bulan Juli 2009, beberapa calon Presiden dan calon Wakil Presiden sudah mulai mendeklarasikan diri.

Berkaitan hajat besar demokrasi yang akan di selenggarakan tahun 2009 ini, calon anggota legislatif (Caleg) DPR, DPRD I, DPRD II, calon anggota DPD dan Calon Presiden/Wakil Presiden tentunya membutuhkan dana yang besar untuk kampanye dan menjalankan program pemenangan lainnya.

Kebutuhan dana yang besar apabila berasal dari sumber dana yang legal tentunya tidak menjadi menjadi masalah. Yang menjadi masalah besar adalah apabila sumber dananya berasal dari sumber yang illegal seperti illegal logging dan merusak lingkungan.

Sudah menjadi rahasia umum, di berbagai daerah praktek illegal logging seringkali melibatkan birokrat, pengusaha dan elit politik lokal/nasional yang menjalankan lansung bisnis kayu illegal, membekingi praktik illegal logging dan merusak lingkungan yang secara kebetulan dalam Pemilu 2009 ini mencalonkan diri sebagai calon anggota legislatif dan calon anggota DPD.

Atas dasar fakta-fakta di atas, Illegal Logging Watch (ILW), seperti ditulis dalam siaran pers yang diterima satudunia.net, mengajak masyarakat Indonesia calon pemilih dalam Pemilihan Umum dan Pemilihan Presiden 2009 untuk menolak/tidak memilih calon anggota DPR RI, DPRD I, DPRD II, DPD, dan calon Presiden/Wakil Presiden RI yang sumber dana pemenangannya (kampanye) berasal dari menjalankan bisnis kayu illegal, membekingi praktik illegal logging dan bisnis lain yang merusak lingkungan.

Atas hal tersebut di atas ILW mengaku akan melakukan beberapa langkah-langkah. Salt Might Be 'Nature's Antidepressant'

Most people consume far too much salt, and a University of Iowa researcher has discovered one potential reason we crave it: it might put us in a better mood.
UI psychologist Kim Johnson and colleagues found in their research that when rats are deficient in sodium chloride, common table salt, they shy away from activities they normally enjoy, like drinking a sugary substance or pressing a bar that stimulates a pleasant sensation in their brains.
"Things that normally would be pleasurable for rats didn't elicit the same degree of relish, which leads us to believe that a salt deficit and the craving associated with it can induce one of the key symptoms associated with depression," Johnson said.
The UI researchers can't say it is full-blown depression because several criteria factor into such a diagnosis, but a loss of pleasure in normally pleasing activities is one of the most important features of psychological depression. And, the idea that salt is a natural mood-elevating substance could help explain why we're so tempted to over-ingest it, even though it's known to contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease and other health problems.

Past research has shown that the worldwide average for salt intake per individual is about 10 grams per day, which is greater than the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended intake by about 4 grams, and may exceed what the body actually needs by more than 8 grams.

Johnson, who holds appointments in psychology and integrative physiology in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and in pharmacology in the Carver College of Medicine, published a review of these findings in the July issue of the journal Physiology & Behavior with Michael J. Morris and Elisa S. Na, UI graduate students. In addition to reporting their own findings, the authors reviewed others' research on the reasons behind salt appetite.

High levels of salt are contained in everything from pancakes to pasta these days, but once upon a time, it was hard to come by. Salt consumption and its price skyrocketed around 2000 B.C. when it was discovered as a food preservative. Roman soldiers were paid in salt; the word salary is derived from the Latin for salt. Even when mechanical refrigeration lessened the need for salt in the 19th century, consumption continued in excess because people liked the taste and it had become fairly inexpensive. Today, 77 percent of our salt intake comes from processed and restaurant foods, like frozen dinners and fast food.

Evolution might have played an important part in the human hankering for salt. Humans evolved from creatures that lived in salty ocean water. Once on land, the body continued to need sodium and chloride because minerals play key roles in allowing fluids to pass in and out of cells, and in helping nerve cells transfer information throughout the brain and body. But as man evolved in the hot climate of Africa, perspiration robbed the body of sodium. Salt was scarce because our early ancestors ate a veggie-rich diet and lived far from the ocean.

"Most of our biological systems require sodium to function properly, but as a species that didn't have ready access to it, our kidneys evolved to become salt misers," Johnson said.

Behavior also came to play a key role in making sure we have enough salt on board. Animals like us come equipped with a taste system designed to detect salt and a brain that remembers the location of salt sources -- like salt licks in a pasture. A pleasure mechanism in the brain is activated when salt is consumed.

So the body needs salt and knows how to find it and how to conserve it. But today scientists are finding evidence that it's an abused, addictive substance -- almost like a drug.

One sign of addiction is using a substance even when it's known to be harmful. Many people are told to reduce sodium due to health concerns, but they have trouble doing so because they like the taste and find low-sodium foods bland.

Another strong aspect of addiction is the development of intense cravings when drugs are withheld. Experiments by Johnson and colleagues indicate similar changes in brain activity whether rats are exposed to drugs or salt deficiency.

"This suggests that salt need and cravings may be linked to the same brain pathways as those related to drug addiction and abuse," Johnson said.

The Lightning Flash Before The Flood

Flash floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States, and because of their unpredictability they’re the leading weather-related cause of death for Americans. They usually arrive with little or no warning, but a Tel Aviv University researcher is trying to predict where and when they will occur ― using lightning.
Prof. Colin Price, coordinator of the international “Flash Project” and head of the Geophysics and Planetary Physics Department at Tel Aviv University, is studying the link between lightning and subsequent flash floods. The three-year study includes scientists from five European countries, and its results are expected to be adopted by weather forecasting agencies around the world.

The goal is to develop an early warning system for people in the path of a flood. “Flash floods are different from normal floods, which are often the product of melting snow. Flash floods are short-lived and dump a lot of rain,” says Prof. Price, a climate change specialist. “Using the radiation emitted from lightning flashes, we’ve developed a system that can give adequate warning to the public ― and save lives.”

Eventually, the Flash system may be used to send messages to cell phones, RSS feeds, GPS units and other devices to warn people in the path of a flash flood and avert disaster.

“Nowcasting” for Flood Warnings

Unlike normal floods which arrive slowly and with more warning, flash floods are particularly dangerous because they happen so quickly, developing from thunderstorms that form in a matter of hours. By measuring the radiation emitted by lightning, researchers can pinpoint the most intense thunderstorms, and the resulting rainfall can be located and tracked.

This data has been used to predict both the path of a storm and where heavy rainfall will appear ― crucial predictions, since the impact of flash floods depends on ground topography, slope and vegetation cover. “Nowcasting,” which predicts what conditions will be in the next few hours, versus “forecasting” a day or two in advance of expected weather conditions, is critical.

Looking at real-time lightning data, Tel Aviv University researchers can see where storms will travel over a period of a few hours, and can warn people in the path of the flood of impending danger. Such a tool will become even more relevant as erratic weather patterns, predicted by climate-change scientists today, become a reality tomorrow.

A Flood of Warnings Delivered in a Flash

The research from the Flash program can be extrapolated for use anywhere in the world, including the flash flood-prone regions of the U.S. For example, the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network could easily apply the results of the Flash research.

“This is a tool for the future,” says Prof. Price. “And it will be even more exciting in the next decade, when we’ll have continuous real-time detection of lightning activity from satellites. That data will be used to predict floods anywhere.” The U.S. will also have geostationary satellites with lightning trackers that will take a picture every 15 minutes from 36,000 kilometers above the earth.

Birds' Movements Reveal Climate Change In Action

The northward and inland movement of North American birds, confirmed by thousands of citizen-observations, has provided new and powerful evidence that climate change is having a serious impact on natural systems, according to a new report by Audubon (BirdLife in the USA). The findings signal the need for dramatic policy changes to combat pervasive ecological disruption.
Analyses of citizen-gathered data from the past 40 years of Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count reveal that 58% of the 305 widespread species that winter on the continent have shifted significantly north since 1968, some by hundreds of kilometres. Movement was detected among species of every type, including more than 70% of highly adaptable forest and feeder birds. Only 38% of grassland species mirrored the trend, reflecting the constraints of their severely-depleted habitat and suggesting that they now face a double threat from the combined stresses of habitat loss and climate adaptation.

Population shifts among individual species are common and can have many causes. However, Audubon scientists say the ongoing trend of movement by some 177 species—closely correlated to long-term winter temperature increases—reveals an undeniable link to the changing climate.

"Birds are showing us how the heavy hand of humanity is tipping the balance of nature and causing ecological disruption in ways we are just beginning to predict and comprehend", said report co-author and Audubon Director of Bird Conservation, Dr Greg Butcher. "Common sense dictates that we act now to curb the causes and impacts of global warming to the extent we can, and shape our policies to better cope with the disruptions we cannot avoid."

Movements across all species averaged approximately 56 kilometres during the period. However, it is the complete picture of widespread movement and the failure of some species to move at all that illustrates the potential for problems.

* Purple Finch Carpodacus purpureus, Pine Siskin Carduelis pinus, and Boreal Chickadee Parus hudsonicus have retreated dramatically north into the Canadian Boreal, their ranges moving an estimated 500, 395, and 340 kilometres respectively over 40 years.

* Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator, Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris, and American Black Duck Anas rubripes, normally found in southern-tier states, have all taken advantage of warmer winter waters and have shifted their ranges north by an estimated 393, 272, and 226 kilometres.

* Only 10 of 26 grassland species moved north significantly, while nine moved south. Species such as Eastern Meadowlark Sturnella magna, Vesper Sparrow Pooecetes gramineus, and Burrowing Owl Athene cunicularia were likely unable to move despite more moderate northern temperatures because essential grassland habitat areas have disappeared, having been converted to intensive human uses such as row crops, pastures, and hayfields. In combination, global warming and ongoing overuse of grasslands by humans will doom grassland birds to continued population declines.

"Birds provide some of the best evidence for species's responses to climate change, through their population size, distribution and timing of breeding and migration", said Dr Stuart Butchart, BirdLife's Global Research and Indicators Coordinator. "There is now plenty of evidence that bird species are shifting their ranges northwards and to higher altitudes, and that their timing of breeding and migration is shifting forwards in response to climate change."

New Oil Deposits Can Be Identified Through Satellite Images

A new map of the Earth’s gravitational force based on satellite measurements makes it much less resource intensive to find new oil deposits. The map will be particularly useful as the ice melts in the oil-rich Arctic regions. Ole Baltazar, senior scientist at the National Space Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Space), headed the development of the map.The US company Fugro, one of the world’s leading oil exploration companies, is one of the companies that have already made use of the gravitational map. The company has now initiated a research partnership with DTU Space.

“Ole Baltazar’s gravitational map is the most precise and has the widest coverage to date,” says Li Xiong, Vice President and Head Geophysicist with Fugro. “On account of its high resolution and accuracy, the map is particularly useful in coastal areas, where the majority of the oil is located.”

Satellite measurements result in high precision

Ole Baltazar’s map shows variations in gravitational force across the surface of the Earth and knowledge about these small variations is a valuable tool in oil exploration. Subterranean oil deposits are encapsulated in relatively light materials such as limestone and clay and because these materials are light, they have less gravitational force than the surrounding materials.

Ole Baltazar’s map is based on satellite measurements and has a hitherto unseen level of detail and accuracy. With this map in your hands, it is, therefore, easier to find new deposits of oil underground.

Climate change is revealing new sea regions

The gravitational map from DTU Space is unique on account of its resolution of only 2 km and the fact that it covers both land and sea regions. Oil companies use the map in the first phases of oil exploration. Previously, interesting areas were typically selected using protracted, expensive measurements from planes or ships. The interesting areas appear clearly on the map and the companies can, therefore, plan their exploration much more efficiently.

“The map will also be worth its weight in gold when the ice in the Arctic seriously begins to melt, revealing large sea regions where it is suspected that there are large deposits of oil underground. With our map, the companies can more quickly start to drill for oil in the right places without first having to go through a resource-intensive exploration process,” explains Ole Baltazar.

Based on height measurements instead of direct gravitation measurements

The success of the gravitational map is due in large part to the fact that it is not based on direct gravitation measurements but on observations of the height of the sea, which reflects the gravitation.

“Height measurements have the advantage that it is possible to determine the gravitational field very locally and thus make a gravitational map with a resolution of a few km. For comparison, the resolution of satellite measurements of gravitational force is typically around 200 km. Satellite gravitation measurements are used, for example, to explore conditions in the deeper strata of the Earth, but are not well suited to our purposes,” Ole Baltazar explains.

NASA Survey Confirms Climate Warming Impact On Polar Ice Sheets

In the most comprehensive survey ever undertaken of the massive ice sheets covering both Greenland and Antarctica, NASA scientists confirm climate warming is changing how much water remains locked in Earth's largest storehouse of ice and snow.Other recent studies have shown increasing losses of ice in parts of these ice sheets. This new survey is the first to inventory the losses of ice and the addition of new snow on both continents in a consistent way throughout an entire decade.

The survey shows that there was a net loss of ice from the combined polar ice sheets between 1992 and 2002 and a corresponding rise in sea level. The survey documents for the first time extensive thinning of the West Antarctic ice shelves and an increase in snowfall in the interior of Greenland, as well as thinning at the edges. All are signs of a warming climate predicted by computer models.

The survey, published in the Journal of Glaciology, combines new satellite mapping of the height of the ice sheets from two European Space Agency satellites. It also used previous NASA airborne mapping of the edges of the Greenland ice sheets to determine how fast the thickness is changing.

In Greenland, the survey saw large ice losses along the southeastern coast and a large increase in ice thickness at higher elevations in the interior due to relatively high rates of snowfall. This study suggests there was a slight gain in the total mass of frozen water in the ice sheet over the decade studied, contrary to previous assessments.

This situation may have changed in just the past few years, according to lead author Jay Zwally of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. Last month NASA scientists at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., reported a speed up of ice flow into the sea from several Greenland glaciers. That study included observations through 2005; Zwally's survey concluded with 2002 data.

When the scientists added up the overall gains and loses of ice from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, there was a net loss of ice to the sea. The amount of water added to the oceans (20 billion tons) is equivalent to the total amount of freshwater used in homes, businesses and farming in New York, New Jersey and Virginia each year.

"The study indicates that the contribution of the ice sheets to recent sea-level rise during the decade studied was much smaller than expected, just two percent of the recent increase of nearly three millimeters a year," says Zwally. "Continuing research using NASA satellites and other data will narrow the uncertainties in this important issue."

NASA is continuing to monitor the polar ice sheets with the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat), launched in January 2003. ICESat uses a laser beam to measure the elevation of ice sheets with unprecedented accuracy three times a year. The first comprehensive ice sheet survey conducted by ICESat is expected early next year, said Zwally, who is the mission's project scientist.

Major ice-shelf loss

The ice shelves in Canada's High Arctic have lost a colossal area this year, scientists report.
The floating tongues of ice attached to Ellesmere Island, which have lasted for thousands of years, have seen almost a quarter of their cover break away.
One of them, the 50 sq km (20 sq miles) Markham shelf, has completely broken off to become floating sea-ice.
Researchers say warm air temperatures and reduced sea-ice conditions in the region have assisted the break-up.
"These substantial calving events underscore the rapidity of changes taking place in the Arctic," said Trent University's Dr Derek Mueller.
"These changes are irreversible under the present climate."

Scientists reported in July that substantial slabs of ice had calved from Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, the largest of the Ellesmere shelves.
Similar changes have been seen in the other four shelves.
As well as the complete breakaway of the Markham, the Serson shelf lost two sections totalling an estimated 122 sq km (47 sq miles), and the break-up of the Ward Hunt has continued.
Cold remnants
The shelves themselves are merely remnants of a much larger feature that was once bounded to Ellesmere Island and covered almost 10,000 sq km (3,500 sq miles).
Over the past 100 years, this expanse of ice has retreated by 90%, and at the start of this summer season covered just under 1,000 sq km (400 sq miles).
Much of the area was lost during a warm period in the 1930s and 1940s.
Temperatures in the Arctic are now even higher than they were then, and a period of renewed ice shelf break-up has ensued since 2002.
Unlike much of the floating sea-ice which comes and goes, the shelves contain ice that is up to 4,500 years old.
A rapid sea-ice retreat is being experienced across the Arctic again this year, affecting both the ice attached to the coast and floating in the open ocean.
The floating sea-ice, which would normally keep the shelves hemmed in, has shrunk to just under five million sq km, the second lowest extent recorded since the era of satellite measurement began about 30 years ago.
"Reduced sea-ice conditions and unusually high air temperatures have facilitated the ice shelf losses this summer," said Dr Luke Copland from the University of Ottawa.
"And extensive new cracks across remaining parts of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf mean that it will continue to disintegrate in the coming years."
Loss of ice in the Arctic, and in particular the extensive sea-ice, has global implications.
The "white parasol" at the top of the planet reflects energy from the Sun straight back out into space, helping to cool the Earth.
Further loss of Arctic ice will see radiation absorbed by darker seawater and snow-free land, potentially warming the Earth's climate at an even faster rate than current observational data indicates.

Best Colleges 2009 In USA

Harvard tops this year's list of America's Best Colleges from U.S. News & World Report. It's the first time since 1996 that the Cambridge, Mass., university is alone at the top of the National Universities category. Princeton and Yale come in second and third, respectively, while Amherst College and Williams College share the No. 1 spot on the Liberal Arts Colleges list.

This year, Harvard managed to beat perennial No. 1 Princeton by one 10th of a point in the reputation survey the magazine sends out to college administrators across the country, in addition to making slight improvements in some of the other statistical measures. Harvard, which has a nearly $35 billion endowment, made big news last December when it announced that it would increase the financial packages it offers to students from families that earn $180,000 or less. The move was a dramatic leap beyond the $60,000 threshold that other highly selective universities had been using to determine which students were eligible for the most generous assistance packages. In another PR boost for the nation's oldest university, last school year was also Harvard's first under the guidance of President Drew Gilpin Faust. Her predecessor, Lawrence Summers, left after making controversial remarks about women in the science disciplines.

The reputation survey that U.S. News sends to top college officials at each school counts for 25 percent of a college's ranking. The other 75 percent is based on quantitative data that assesses a college's performance in areas such as graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, financial resources, student selectivity, and alumni giving. Each year, the formula is reassessed to stay on top of recent developments in higher education. For example, just as Harvard and dozens of other colleges recently have made adjustments to become more accessible to families of lesser financial means, U.S. News has incorporated data about the proportion of low-income students a school enrolls into its ranking measurements.

These periodic methodology adjustments make flat year-to-year comparisons of a school's U.S. News ranking somewhat misleading. Nevertheless, alumni always tend to take note of which schools have gained an edge on their academic rivals. For example, in the National Universities list this year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology finished in fourth place, besting its West Coast rival, the California Institute of Technology, which landed in sixth place. Last year, Caltech held the edge with a fifth place ranking while MIT placed seventh. Part of the difference: MIT improved its faculty resources statistics slightly, while Caltech dipped there a little. (As in Olympic swimming, slightly better performance makes a big difference in results at this level of rankings.)

Over on the Liberal Arts Colleges list, this year the United States Military Academy was ranked 14th, besting its rival, the United States Naval Academy, which held the 22nd slot. Last year, Navy had the edge, finishing 20th while Army was 22nd.

Hari ini aku mendapatkan sebuah email dari milis yang aku ikuti, isinya membuat saya sangat shock, tidak percaya, unbelievable, tapi apa kata karena ada bukti fotonya. Foto itu melibatkan salah satu tokoh politukus yang menurut saya beliau adalah salah satu orang yang berpengaruh di negeri ini, yaitu Ibu Megawati, pemimpin partai PDI Perjauangan bekas presiden wanita petama indonesia. Ritual tersebut mengharuskan calon legislatif yang bakal maju dalam pemilu bulan April 2009 ini meminum air bekas cucian kaki Megawati.

Mudah-mudahan foto tersebut tidak benar, karena seharusnya seorang negarawan yang baik harus mencegah hal tersebu terjadi, apa jadinya kalau seorang negarawan yang notabene adalah panutan di negeri ini membiarkan ritual yang tidak masuk akal itu terjadi. Akan kemana negeri ini? Negeri ini membutuhkan seorang negarawan yang dapat dijadikan panutan, sebagai pembimbing dari negeri ini yang sudah carut marut wajah perilakunya, contoh yang paling mutakhir ini adalah kasus Ponari yang sangat menghebohkan. Rakyat sudah mulai menunjukkan perilaku yang sudah sangat melenceng dari yang seharusnya, ilmu pengetahuan dan agama sudah tidak dapat membendung perilaku perilaku menyimpang. Apakah mungkin meminum celupan batu ponari, bekas cucian kaki seorang pemimpin akan dapat merubah nasib seseorang? Adapun klo berubah, itu hanya kebetulan saja, tidak karena air tersebut.

You can still feel free to talk to them and reassure them. Experts on death typically say that hearing is the last sense to fade away. They may feel your presence and your words even though they cannot respond.

Death will likely come very quietly. And, you may be surprised to find that you are more comfortable sitting with your loved one’s body than you expected. It’s ok to take some time before letting their body be transported away.

We’ve all had a loved one die – but not all of us have been a part of another’s final experiences. The prospect of being with a person when they die can be very frightening. However, it can also be a fitting end to a long relationship and a life experience that you will treasure years down the road.

Step 4- In the “Proxy Server” options, select “Do Not Use” Once you have done this, you just need to confirm everything, and when you are prompted to, save it all by pushing X.

Step 5- Launch Wipeout:Pure in the usual way, and go into the Downloads menu. As soon as you are asked to pick a connection, select the one that you have edited in the earlier steps, and you should find the Endgadget web screen right in front of you. That is how it is done!
